Who am I?

Hi, my name is Brendon D’Souza and I’m a food writer and stylist living in Sydney, Australia. I do admit that my pen name may be slight misnomer. I’m not a pro chef, but let’s be honest, Brendon The Smiling Food Writer just didn’t have the same ring to it. None-the-less, food is a passion of mine. I live it and breathe it. I cook every day, sourcing the freshest ingredients money can buy. If I’m not cooking food, I’m reading about food, watching videos about food, dreaming about food or writing about food.

Why I blog about food

I want to change the way we think about our food. To create a desire for food that is produced in an organic and ethical manner. I would like to share my love of food with you all through a collection of stories and photographs about amazing dishes from around the world and the places where I learnt to cook them.

Thoughts on Veganism

Though I’m not strictly Vegan, I do really enjoy cooking and eating vegan and vegetarian meals during the week. I enjoy the challenge of turning ordinary plant-based ingredients into midweek marvels, and I firmly believe that consuming less animal products is not only beneficial to the animals themselves, but will help protect the environment for years to come. Also, there’s something about the vibrant colours, flavours and textures in vegan cooking that leave me feeling energised – it definitely puts a smile on my face. I’m not quite 100% vegan as yet, but I’ll never say never. Do you think I should give veganism a shot? Let me know in the comments below.

Who is this blog for?

If you are a young person (or young person at heart) who wonders what to cook for lunch or dinner each day then this you’ve come to the right place. My meal ideas are fresh and tasty, and most importantly easy to make because they feature things you’ve probably already got at home.

Foodie friends

Every now and then (if we’re lucky) we’ll get to catch up with some awesome people who are doing some great things with food. They’ll share their food memories and cultures and their favorite recipes.

Smiling & Dining @

Aside from cooking I love exploring the restaurant scene in Sydney and around the world. It allows me to gain great insight into current food trends and I’m often amazed by the quality of the meals I’ve tried and tasted on my #eatventures. The Smiling & Dining @ section of this blog features stories, reviews and delicious #foodpics of some delightful works of art that I’ve eaten on my journey. I keep my reviews as honest and objective as possible, and I like to review as many restaurants as possible, not just the fancy ones, in order to give you the reader the best possible overview of what to expect if you were to visit the venue yourself. I pay for all my meals but do fully disclose instances when the meal has been provided for me.
